With spring comes the return of hummingbirds, and the feeder on Galiano that my Dad carefully tends is the centre of the local hummingbird community. But not all is well in this Eden: Hollywood has nothing on the fighting and drama of these characters. Scott and I sat at the window for hours with our jaws dropped, first watching the boys chase off the girls, then the girls sneak back in while an eye was turned, then the smaller dude fight off one of the girls and the other guy, before the other girl crept out from her hiding spot in the bushes. Noisy buzzing, angry chatter, and at some point over the weekend both Scott and I became the intended target of a near miss when we wandered too close to the protected zone.
But on Monday morning we spotted three of them, all peacefully sipping together at various points on the feeder. No wonder they were getting along: they were all completely hungry and exhausted.
